Give reasons for the following:
1)There is either a convergence or a divergence of magnetic field lines near the ends of a current carrying straight solenoid.
2)The current carrying solenoid when suspended freely rests along a particular direction.

1).The divergence (degree of closeness) of magnetic field lines near the ends of a current carrying straight solenoid indicates a decrease in the strength of the magnetic field near the ends of the solenoid.

2).That means the current carrying solenoid behaves as a magnet. One end of it behaves like a magnetic north pole and the other end as magnetic south pole.

Answer:1

The divergence (degree of closeness) of magnetic field lines near the ends of a current carrying straight solenoid indicates a decrease in the strength of the magnetic field near the ends of the solenoid.

Answer:2

A current-carrying solenoid behaves like a bar magnet. We know that a freely suspended bar magnet aligns itself in the north-south direction. So, a freely suspended current-carrying solenoid also aligns itself in the north-south direction.
