Topographical maps, also known as general purpose maps, are drawn at relatively large scales. These maps show important natural and cultural features such as relief, vegetation, water bodies, cultivated land, settlements, and transportation networks, etc

Topographical maps are also called contour maps or topographical sheets

It is easier to move personnel and supplies along a level, paved road than across a series of brush-covered hills and valleys. Topographic maps contain the information needed to decide where to go and where to position things.

Point, line and area symbols are used to depict various physical and cultural features. They can be in the form of alphabets, figures, signs or colour wash. The Survey Of India ( SOI) have standardised a set of conventional signs and symbols to be used in topographical maps.
