a) Metals are highly reactive and in nature and are unstable, since metals have only 1 to 3 electrons in the valence shell they can easily lose their valence electron. Thus, metal are generally found in sulphides and carbonates. But some noble metals like gold and platinum are found in their original state because they do not react.
b) Unlike insulators like wood and paper metals have many free electrons so the kinetic energy can be easily transferred. This is the reason for metals being a good conductors of heat.
