An organism that feeds on or derives nourishment from decaying organic matter are called saphrotrophs.

Mushroom does not contain chlorophyll. So it cannot make its own food. So it grows on dead and decaying matters and absorb the needed nutrients from them. Thus mushrooms are saprophyte.
