a . Salt is soluble in water and make it a homogeneous mixture. On dissolving they fill up the spaces between water molecules so they disappears whe dissolved in water . Also they are physical change as they can be regained by evaporation.
b. Sponge has a lot of air spaces in it as a result we can compress it

salt disappears when dissolved in water because the mixture of salt and water is homogeneous mixture
sponge is a solid but can be compressed because when we compress it the solid matter of it does not compress but the air present in it comes out. there for it seems that sponge is compressed.
