Question:-
Give reasons for the following :
a) The stars appear to twinkle.
b) The colour of ocean is blue.
c) The colour of sky in the space is blackhi
Required Answer:-
a) The stars appear to twinkle
= The twinkling of stars is due to atmospheric refraction of star-light. The atmosphere is made of several layers and the refractive indices which keep on changing continuously due to this path of light rays from the star keep on changing their path continuously. As a consequence the number of rays entering, the pupil of the eye goes on changing with time and the stars appear twinkling.
b) The colour of ocean is blue
= The ocean is blue because water absorbs colors in the red part of the light spectrum. Like a filter, this leaves behind colors in the blue part of the light spectrum for us to see. The ocean may also take on green, red, or other hues as light bounces off of floating sediments and particles in the water.
c) The colour of sky in the space is blackhi
= Looking toward the sun we thus see a brilliant white light while looking away we would see only the darkness of empty space. Since there is virtually nothing in space to scatter or re-radiate the light to our eye, we see no part of the light and the sky appears to be black.
