Answer:

1)Marco Polo, the Italian explorer, visited China and learnt the technology of woodblock printing. ... When he returned to Italy in 1295, he brought this knowledge back with him. Gradually, this knowledge spread from Italy to other parts of Europe.

2)Martin Luther was in favour of print and spoke out in praise of it because print media helped popularise and spread his ideas. ... This was only possible due to the improvements in print technology which had allowed even the working classes to gain access to books.

3)The Roman Catholic Church had to face many dissents from mid-16th century onwards. People had written many books that interpreted the God and the creation in their own ways or as they liked. Therefore, the church banned such books and kept the record of such banned books. It was called the Index of Prohibited Books.

4)According to Gandhi said Swaraj is a fight for liberty of speech, liberty of the press, and freedom of association because he believed that these are the powerful modes of expression and cultivation of public opinion

Answer:

Woodblock printing is laborious, expensive and time-consuming work. Woodblock printing began to widely spread in Europe to print textiles, playing cards, religious pictures etc.

Martin Luther was in favour of print and spoke out in praise of it because print media helped popularise and spread his ideas. In 1517, he wrote the Ninety Five Theses, criticising the practices and rituals of the Roman Catholic Church. These writings were immediately reproduced in vast numbers and read widely.

The Roman Church, troubled by such effects of popular readings and questionings of faith, imposed severe controls over publishers and booksellers and began to maintain an Index of Prohibited Books from 1558. Write short notes to show what you know about: The Gutenberg Press.

Answer: According to Gandhi said Swaraj is a fight for liberty of speech, liberty of the press, and freedom of association because he believed that these are the powerful modes of expression and cultivation of public opinion.
