Answer:

Because it is the best place to build a human society in the entire world.

It is in the tropical regions of the planet, with a stable and almost never-changing climate. Meaning there aren’t any of the major weather extremes that would prevent people from living there, such as blizzards or sandstorms.

All of Southeast Asia, with a few highland exceptions, lie within the tropical zone as no point in the region exceeds the Tropic of Cancer or the Tropic of Capricorn. Droughts are virtually non-occurring in the tropics, so there is no need for concern for water because it is always falling from the sky every single day.

After that, a large portion of ASIAN’s 4,500,000 km sq. land area is either volcanic island or is intersected by rivers carrying water and silt from volcanic mountains in the Himalayas. That is what makes the agricultural soil here among the most productive in the world, producing rice, millet, fruits, vegetables and palm oil.

The various ASIAN countries can both feed themselves and export billions of dollars in produce every year.

Third, Southeast Asia is in a geographical center for trade that has passed through the region since the Austronesian invasions.

The Straits of Malacca, South China Sea/West Philippine Sea and the various seas that make up Indonesia’s modern core are perfect for the passage of trade, development of maritime culture and attractive for immigrants, such as Indian and Chinese merchants and businessmen, European missionaries and colonists and Austronesian seafarers and raiders who make up the majority of the modern population here.

It is a matter of geography here that makes it so highly populated with a tenth of the earth’s people.
