Give reasons for the following:

(i) Chalk is a solid.

(ii)Gas fills the entire shape of a containing vessel

(iii)Gas exerts pressure on the walls of the container

(iv) Solids do not diffuse into one another.

(v) Liquids have a fixed volume but not a fixed shape.

(vi) Gases do not have a fixed volume or fixed shape.

i) CHALK IS A SOLID BECAUSE IT HAS A DEFINITE SHAPE AND IN IT PARTICLES ARE TIGHTLY PACKED. 2.IN GAS THERE IS HUGE INTERMOLECULAR SPACE SO WHEN WE INSERT GAS IN A CONTAINER IT WILL COVER ALL AREA INSIDE. ... FOR DIFFUSION THERE SHOULD BE MOVEMENT OF PARTICLES AND SINCE IN SOLIDS PARTICLE DO NOT MOVE NO DIFFUSION TAKES PLACED .

ii) A gas completely fills the vessel in which it is kept because there is a negligible force of attraction between the particles of gas. Thus, the gas particles move freely in all directions.

Thus, the gas particles move freely in all directions.iii) The molecules are continually colliding with each other and with the walls of the container. When a molecule collides with the wall, they exert small force on the wall The pressure exerted by the gas is due to the sum of all these collision forces. The more particles that hit the walls, the higher the pressure.

Solid particles are closely and tightly packed around each other that they cannot move to diffuse into one another.

Solid particles are closely and tightly packed around each other that they cannot move to diffuse into one another.v). Because the particles in liquids are very close together (barely further apart than in solids) liquids do not easily compress, so their volume is fixed. Gases can also flow, so occupy the shape of their whole container. They do not have a fixed shape. ... They do not have a fixed volume.

vi The molecules in gases are very apart from each other. Therefore, gases neither have a fixed volume nor a fixed shape. For instance as in solids, it has a fixed shape and a fixed volume because the molecules in a solid are closely and tightly packed together. ... It takes the shape of the container it is put in.

hope you know ☺️♥️
