(i) Unsaturated hydrocarbons include compounds in which carbon atoms form double or triple bonds with each other. They undergo an addition reaction to add another atom to the carbon atoms forming a double or triple bond so that they can form an alkane which is more stable than the Alcene or the Alcyne.

(ii) Copper sulphate gives a blue color to alcohol, so it becomes easier to identify alcohol intended for industrial use. To avoid misuse of industrial alcohol, it is denatured with methanol and copper sulphate. Methanol makes it toxic and copper sulfate gives a blue color.

Unsaturated hydrocarbons like alkene or alkyne show addition reaction as they contain multiple bonds in them.

Explanation:

  • They contain pie bond, which is weak and can be easily broken down. E.g. Catalytic reduction of alkene by hydrogen in the presence of catalyst such as nickel, platinum or palladium.
  • The alcohol supplied for industrial purposes is made unfit for drinking to prevent the misuse of alcohol.
  • Alcohol supplied for industrial purpose is mixed with substance like copper sulphate. This makes it poisonous. The alcohol obtained thus is called denatured alcohol.
