The molecules are continually colliding with each other and with the walls of the container. When a molecule collides with the wall, they exert small force on the wall The pressure exerted by the gas is due to the sum of all these collision forces.

Answer:

Gas exerts pressure on on the walls of the container because gases have high intermolecular space and when the container filled with water is heated, by keeping a plate on it the vapour which is a gas starts to create pressure on the container by shaking the plate due to increase in the temperature and the change in state.
