If the SC / ST communities were given a separate electorate, then certain constituencies would have been reserved for them, and only the people belonging to SC / ST communities would have been able to vote for the candidates contesting those seats, thus alienating the rest of the Hindus.

For seven decades, there has been a reservation for the SC/ST minorities in the Lok Sabha, but still, their representation is quite less as compared to other communities to make or amend laws.

  • It has been discovered that the presence of SC/ST members in various committees does not correspond to their proportional representation in the Lok Sabha, indicating that these lawmakers have little power and influence in the national assembly.
  • One-fifth (20.04% of 489 seats) of the seats in India's first general election was set aside for the SC (72) and ST (26) minorities.
  • Seven decades later, it is crucial to assess whether reservation—now at 24.13% or 131 of 543 Lok Sabha seats—has impacted SC/ST lawmakers' influence in parliament, their ability to raise issues there, their access to key decision-making positions as committee chairs, their participation in a variety of parliamentary committees, etc.
