In solid state, the solid particles are very close to each other due to strong intermolecular force of attraction between them. Therefore, they have least intermolecular space that makes them denser compare to liquids and gases. Hence, solids have high densities.

Density is basically how compact mass is ( more scientifically , how much mass is one unit volume ) . That is going to be important.
Newton's third law states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Now , for something to sink in water , it has to push the water out of the way so it can fit there , so, if something with a volume of 1 liter is to sink in water , it has to push 1 liter of water out of the way . in case of iron , 1 liter of iron has more density than 1 liter of water , it pushes 1 liter of water , the water tries to push back , but cannot do so as it has less mass than the iron . wood is the opposite , it's density is less than water , so it can't push the required amount of water out of the way to sink.
