  • Because during expiration/exhalation the lungs don't get completely empty it has some volume of air inside.
  • The air left inside the lung after expiration is called Residual Volume which is 1100ml .
  • we have sufficient for gaseous exchange as it occurs due to diffusion , pressure gradient and partial pressure of O2 and CO2
  • While expiring pressure is high inside the lungs and lower outside so the air from lungs gushes out in the atmosphere.
  • while inspiring the pressure is high outside in atmosphere and low inside the lungs so the air gushes inside the lungs from the Atmosphere.
  • Inspiration takes = 2 seconds
  • Expiration takes = 3 seconds
  • A healthy human breaths 12-16 times per minute
  • A healthy infant breathes 44 times per minute .
