Hydrogen is flammable whereas oxygen is non-flammable. Water, made up of one molecule of oxygen and two molecules of hydrogen, does not possess qualities of individual constituents. Thus, the water helps in extinguishing fire even though its constituents, hydrogen, and oxygen.

  • Hydrogen is flammable, but oxygen is not. Flammability is the ability of combustible material with an adequate supply of oxygen to sustain enough heat energy to keep a fire going after it has been ignited.
  • By absorbing a very large amount of heat during vaporization, water draws energy from the fire site and thus cools it down until the fire goes out , Water cools the fire site and thus extinguishes the fire. Therefore, water has its own properties, which helps to extinguish the fire.
