A mature mammalian erythrocytes lack nucleus and mitochondria, because it's function is to carry oxygen throughout the body. Absence of nucleus will give it more area to absorb O2. and since it lacks Mitochondria it will not use the O2 for itself for the preparation of energy.

This process can take place even in the presence of light,but does not necessarily require light. Hence it would be better to call it Light independent phase rather than Dark phase.
