The main reason Gandhi was important for Indian Nationalism was his different opinion and ideology .

Before him no one had ever thought that a battle could be won without fighting it.

In South Africa, he had already learned about racial discrimination (apartheid) and experienced it, so it was not difficult for him to understand situation of his countrymen.

On returning to India in 1916, he started practicing non-violence civil disobedience act.

The battle of Champaran was the very first step towards Independence. This battle helped him gain fame and respect among Indians.
