co2 means carbon dioxide .it is a gas because when we breathe oxygen and release carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide is a gas used by plants to prepare food.

the reason why CO2 is a gas.. and silicone dioxide is a solid because their chemical structures are different ...CO2 is a linear structure with two double bonds between carbon and oxygen ... it is a small molecule and non polar with only weak bonds between the molecules..hence it is a gas...
