because the activity of particles in hot substance is more, but in cool substance it's less. for example water molecules move rapidly when it is boiling but when you freeze it, the molecules won't move. The same happens in the air too.

The particlesof the aroma of food mix with the particles of air and reach us and if we are very far from it.

The smell of hot sizzling food reaches in seconds as compared to cold food because of the rate of diffusion. As we know diffusion is greater in hot things. As the temperature rises, particles move faster. So, we can also say that with the increasing in temperature, the kinetic energy of particle also increases. Due to high speed of particles and large space between them, the smell reach us more faster.

Whereas in cold food, the kinetic energy is less so it reaches us but very slowly. Hence, we have to go near it.

Now, important definitions of some words..

Diffusion - when the particles of matter intermix their own with each other and get into the spaces between the particles. This intermixing of particles of two different types of matter on their own is called diffusion.

Kinetic energy - particles of matter are always in motion. This is called kinetic energy.

Another thing is, the space of particles in a solid matter is the least. In liquid, intermediate and in gas, it's greatest. So in gas, diffusion takes place more easily and quickly.
