Friction is considered to be a Necessary Evil i.e. it is disadvantageous but if it is not present we will not be able to do many things which we normally take for granted.
- Consider the sole of the shoes, if the soles of the shoes are polished, then the coefficient of friction between shoes and the ground is reduced so one can slip.
- If the soles of the shoes are grooved, then due to the grooves the surface area of contact increases and, this increases the coefficient of friction and as a result reduces the chance of slipping.
- This same thing is Evil if we use grooved shoes on a muddy path, the groove which prevented slipping on normal ground, now in presence of muddy path will increase stickiness and hinder our motion
- When machinery is working, parts of the machinery brush past each other and we have to face wear and tear in the parts and have to replace parts.
- Because of friction, there is heat production which results in loss of energy.
- To reduce the friction that aeroplanes face when flying and boats face when sailing, they have to be designed such that friction is reduced. This is possible by making the body of the aeroplane and boats streamlined.
