If they have a small amount of moisture and in sufficient quantity they will start to compost and literally cook thereby making it useless for human consumption. Farmers sometimes do this deliberately with some products and cook grass and other crops in an anaerobic manner to provide for winter feed as it can be a good way to store feed without drying it
