All plants need nitrogen for their growth but they can't take it in gaseous form and take it in soluble nitrates. That is why cereal crops need nitrogenous fertilizers. But Leguminous plants do not need it bcoz in their roots, a bacteria named Rhizobium lives which converts the gaseous nitrogen into soluble nitrates and provides it to the plants. In return, the legume provides it shelter in its roots.
This relationship between Leguminous plant and Rhizobium is called Symbiotic relationship.
