Give reasons why quick lime is added to acidic soil?

The pH of normal soil is around 7(neutral). If we will add quicklime, which is a base, in acidic soil then the acid will be neutralized and the pH would come back to normal. This is done because acidic soil is not suitable for growing crops.

Excessive use of fertilizers makes the soil too acidic or basic. Plants do not grow well in such soil. If the soil is too acidic,basic quicklime which contains Ca(OH)2 is added to neutralize the acidic nature of soil.
