The three reasons for the decline of some cities or urban centers in India in 19th century are :

1. Import of finished goods and deindustralization in India was a major cause of decline of cities. Due to British commercial interests, Indian traders and artisans lost their job and thus lead to deindustralization. The erosion of industrial base lead to decline of traditional industrial urban centers.

2. The old political and administrative centers were abandoned and new political centers were found which also lead to decline of some cities.

3. Introduction of railways by-passed the traditional trade centers which also was one of the reasons of decline of some cities.
