  • It is believed that Louis XVI was badly influenced by his wife and had no real ideas of his own. They used to reside in the Palace of Tuileries and had no real direct contact with the public.

  • Louis XVI spent too much money. The burden of the taxation was solely on the third estates which comprised of all the poor sections of the society. The first and second estates comprising of Nobles and Clergy enjoyed the freedom from taxation.

  • Louis XVI spent too much money in the American Revolution to pull down the British. The British did back down but it left a huge economic loss to the French. The French population rose from 23 million in 1715 to 28 million in 1789. Increase in population led to the increase in demand and the production of grains couldn't keep pace with the rising population. This led to inflation and the price of bread , which was the staple diet, rose rapidly. The gap between poor and rich widened. This led to Subsistence Crisis.

  • Further, Louis XVI didn't approve the demand of third estate that voting should be conducted by the assembly as whole where each member would have one vote. This led to protest of the third estate and they formed a group and declared themselves as National Assembly. They decided to draft a Constitution themselves and in the period they drafted the Constitution, violence broke out in France due to lack of food, rumours and many other factors.

  • Louis XVI finally accorded recognition to National Assembly and accepted the principles set by the assembly. This led France to become a constitutional monarchy.

  • But, although Louis XVI signed the constitution, he entered into secret negotiation with the King of Prussia. Rulers of other neighbouring countries were too worried by the development in France and they feared that the same event could break out in their kingdoms. But before this could happen National Assembly declared war against Austria and Prussia.
