Vidhan Sabha is supreme legislative body in each state of India, even 2 UT’s (Puducherry and Delhi) also have Legislative Assembly. Only 7 states in India have adopted bicameral legislature i.e. having both Vidhan Sabha (lower house) and Vidhan Parishad (upper house).

Vidhan Sabha's maximum size as outlined in the constitution is not more than 500 members and not fewer than 60 members. However, the size of the Vidhan Sabha can be fewer than 59 members through an Act of parliament eg: Goa, Sikkim, Mizoram and Puducherry. Governor may appoint 1 member from Anglo Indian community, if he finds that they are inadequately represented in the House.
