In order to gain momentum (product of mass and velocity (P=m.v) or can also be defined as a mass in motion) an athlete runs before taking a long jump. The running speed creates momentum during the flight. The rate of change of momentum reduces due to the running and the athlete can cover a longer distance with the same force.
