Air is a mixture because it consists of several gases that are able to be separated by physical means (different temperatures of liquifaction permitting fractional distillation). That is the definition of a mixture - the ability to be separated by physical means.

The air is made up of many different parts- ~78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, plus other gases. This rules out it being a pure substance. ... Yes, air is a mixture of gases, not a chemical compound. The principal components air nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapour and the inert gases.

Hope this will help you.... ✌
