Inner membrane of the mitochondria is folded into cristae.

=> The folds of the inner membrane or the Cristae provide an increase in the Surface Area which gives the Mitochondrion more locations for ATP( the energy currency) production to occur.

Answer:

Scientific reason:

The folds (cristea) of the mitochondria provide a greater surface area (more space) for the chemical reactions of oxidative phosphorylation (process of converting food sugars into energy (ATP)) to take place. Increased surface area allows more proteins that create the electron transport chain during this process to work at making more ATP. More space means more energy “factories” in each mitochondrion and more energy to fuel our cells, organs and systems to sustain life.

There are several examples of this phenomenon in our bodies. Our brains, for example, which are constructed with lots of folds (sulci), providing greater surface area for more cells and increased space for the brain’s circuits and chemical processes. Our small intestine is also folded upon itself to provide for a longer organ allowing more processes of digestion to occur.
