because the particles come in contact with each other and start vibrating this produces the sound

Propagation of sound through air occurs due to energy transfer by vibrating air molecules in one reason to those in the adjacent sides and away from the source. The molecules vibrates about them in position hence air itself is not required to move from one place to another.
