Mushrooms, and by extension fungi, lack many of the traits that are required of plants. With very few exceptions, plants have chlorophyll, strong, cellulose-based walls, and complex tissues. Fungi lack all of these things and are better classified as colony organisms rather than multicellular organisms. They lack the ability to make food from sunlight, have cell walls made out of chitin, and don’t have complex tissues.
