Carbon has certain properties that helps it form unlimited number of compounds.......

(1) Catenation- It is the property of Carbon that allows it form long chains of carbon. It can combine with itself to an infinite extent and thus forms chains and branches even rings.

(2) Tetravalency- Carbon has 4 valence electrons and thus cannot for electrovalent compounds. It forms covalent compounds and can combine with any elements........

Because of two of its properties:-

1) Catenation

2) Tetravalency

{\underline{\underline{\bullet{\textbf{Catenation:-}}}}}

Catenation is the bonding of atoms of the same element into a series, called a chain. A chain or a ring shape may be open if its ends are not bonded to each other, or closed if they are bonded in a ring.

{\underline{\underline{\bullet{\textbf{Tetravalency:-}}}}}

A carbon atom completes its octet only by sharing its valence electrons with other atoms. As a result, carbon atom forms four covalent bonds by sharing valence electrons with other atoms. This is known as tetravalency of carbon,(tetra means four).
