The electron transport chain of the cellular respiration takes place in the inner membrane of the mitochondria. Through the electron transport chain protons (H+) are transferred from the mitochondrial matrix to the intermembrane space, resulting in a high concentration of protons in the latter. A higher concentration of protons outside the matrix causes the protons to re-enter the matrix through the ATP synthase (imagine this to be a sort of rotating door), the protons cause this rotating door to spin and turn ADP + P into ATP. Since ATP is used by so many reactions as an “energy donor” in the human body it is vital that the body, to be more precise, a cell produces large amounts of ATP, therefore the inner membrane needs to have a large surface area, which is reached by having an incredible amount of folds.
