India has emerged as one of the most powerful countries in the past decades. The development that India had made in Science and Technology was possible only because of those greatest scientists who dedicated their whole life to the country. They changed the face of technology in the country and made us powerful on an international level which made us our life modern and more developed. Here are the 10 great scientists whose contribution to the development of the country will always be remembered and keep safe on the golden pages of our history.

1. APJ Abdul Kalam
Former Indian President Lt. APJ Abdul Kalam associated with Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in 1962. Dr. Kalam was credited for making India’s first indigenous missile (SLV-III) as a Satellite Project Director. In 1980, Kalam established Rohini Satellite near the Earth’s orbit. It was only because of the contribution of Dr. Kalam that India could include in the International Space Club. He is also credited for making the ISRO Launch Vehicle Program on top. The Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme was bestowed under the leadership of Abdul Kamal. The interesting part is that he designed ‘Prithvi’ and ‘Agni’ missiles in an indigenous way.

2. C.V. Raman
Chandra Shekhar Venkat Raman was the first Indian scientist to have got Nobel Prize in the field of Science. He was awarded Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. In 1954, India honored him with its highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. He carried out ground-breaking work in the field of light scattering and his invention is known as ‘Raman-Kiran’. He is known for identifying spectrum substance and having the deep knowledge of the nuclear plan. He was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1957. In 1998, the American Chemical Society and Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science recognized Raman’s discovery as an International Historic Chemical Landmark.

3. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar
Born in Kolhapur in Maharashtra, Jayant Vishnu Narlikar is a physicist who developed conformal gravity theory with Sir Fred Hoyle which is commonly known as Hoyle-Narlikar theory. He has also worked on the Big Bang Theory. Narlikar has received several national and international awards and honorary doctorates. He was honored with India’s second highest civilian honor, Padma Vibushan in 2004. Apart from scientific papers and books and popular science literature, Narlikar has written science fiction, novels, and short stories.

4. Vikram Sarabhai
Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai was an Indian scientist and innovator widely regarded as the father of India’s space program. He set the foundation of space programme in India and opened 40 space and research centers in the country. He also contributed in the field of atomic energy, electronics, and many others. The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, which is the Indian Space research Organization’s lead facility for launch vehicle development located in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), is named in his memory.

5. Jagdish Chandra Bose

Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose was a polymath, physicist, biologist, biophysicist, botanist, and archaeologist. He was the first scientist in the world pioneered the investigation of radio and microwave optics. He also laid very significant contributions to plant science. He was the first Indian scientist who got the American patent. He is known as the father of Radiology all over the world.

6. Homi Jehangir Bhabha
Known as the “father of the Indian nuclear program”, Homi J. Bhabha was an India Nuclear physicist without whom Indian nuclear program can’t be imagined. He is also known as the Architect of Indian atomic energy program. First, ever nuclear test of the country in 1974 was possible only because of him. The interesting thing is that he started doing research in the field of nuclear science when nobody had known about it. After his death, the Atomic Energy Establishment at Bombay was renamed as the Bhabha Atomic Research center in his honor.

7. Satyendra Nath Bose
Satyendra Nath Bose is best known for his work on quantum mechanics which set the foundation for Bose-Einstein statistics and the theory of the Bose-Einstein condensate. He was honored with India’s second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan in 1954. Apart from physics, he did research in biotechnology and literature. He made deep studies in chemistry, geology, zoology, anthropology, engineering and other sciences.
