Corpus luteum temporarily secretes the hormone progesterone.

  • The corpus luteum is a temporary secreting structure formed in the female ovary after the release of the egg (ova). It is formed from the mature follicle that covered the egg.
  • The corpus luteum secretes an important female hormone called progesterone that is required to maintain the conditions of the uterus incase the egg is fertilized.
  • If there is no fertilization of the egg and the normal menstrual cycle continues, the corpus luteum stops secreting the hormone and degenerates into corpus albicans.
