Explanation:
Ethanol and 1-propanol can be distinguished with the help of iodoform test. As ethanol gives yellow precipitates of iodoform by reacting with iodine in presence of base. But 1-Propanol does not undergo this reaction.

The simple chemical test to distinguish between ethanol and propanone is to treat them with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (2,4 DNP).
- Aldehydes and ketones reacts with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine to form corresponding hydrazones which precipitates out as a yellow coloured ppt.
- Hence, propanone on treatment with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine gives yellow ppt. while ethanol does not give any ppt.
- The two compounds cannot be distinguished by iodoform test as both gives a positive iodoform test.
