Sciophytes are shade-loving trees or plants. These plants have larger photosynthetic units than sun plants orheliophytes. Sciophytes are also known as photophobous plants and they reach their saturation level in only 20% sunlight.

Following are the differences between heliophytes (HP) and sycophytes (SP)

• HP: they grow under sunlight

SP: they thrive in shade away from sunlight

• HP: bigger in size

SP: smaller in size

• HP: have more chlorophyll content

SP: have less chlorophyll content

• HP: perform intense photosynthesis

SP: show stunted rate of photosynthesis

• HP: examples are teak and betula

SP: examples are Aegle and Nyctanthus

• HP: pioneers in tropical forests

SP: colonize after establishment of HPs
