ANSWER :

INERTIA :

Inertia is the resistance property of a body to resist the change in state of a body.

Note :

Measure of inertia is mass

Dimension formula is \mathsf{{M}^{1} {L}^{0} {T}^{0}}

S.I unit of Inertia is kg

There are three types of Inertia

1. Inertia of rest : The inertia (resistance) offered by a body to change it's change of rest.

Examples :

When a blanket is given a sudden J erk , the dust particles fall off.

When you hit a striker on a pile of carrom counters , you will observe that only the lowest counter moves away.

When things are kept on a cloth on dining table , the cloth can be removed without any disturbance to things by removing suddenly.

2. Inertia of motion : The inertia offered by a body to change it's state of uniform motion is called inertia of motion.

Examples :

When we switch off a fan , it continues to rotate even after sometime.

An athlete runs for some distance before taking a long jump. In this way , the athlete gains momentum due to inertia of motion.

Satellites move in space due to inertia of motion.

3. Inertia of direction : The resistance or inertia offered by a body to change it's direction of motion is called Inertia of direction.

Examples :

When a stone tied to one end of a string is whirled and the string breaks suddenly , the stone flies off along the tangent of the circle.

When a ball is thrown up , it goes up and falls down back again in same direction.
