Overlapping is situation in which factors like poverty, landlessness, discrimination or injustice contributes to social difference to form social divisions and tensions.

Cross cutting is situation in which social classes are equally likely to be rich or poor, thus may result in conflicts but are easier to accommodate.

Overlapping is a situation in which a social difference becomes more important than the other one. It creats social division which is difficult to accommodate.

For example- In north Ireland the society was divided into protestents and Roman Catholic with 53% nd 44% population respectively. Here Catholics were usually poor, landless and we're discriminated. So class and religion overlapped each other.

Cross-cutting is a situation in which two social differences cross cut each other. In this case it is difficult to pit one group against the other.

For example- In Netherlands, protestents and Catholics were equally to be rich or poor and it is difficult to pit one against the other. These situations are best suited and can be handled easily. It doesn't create social division.
