Reactions with Acids

Two reactions with acids have already been examined: reactions of acid with water to give off H+ and reactions of acids with bases to form water and a salt. There are three other types of reactions with acids that will be helpful to understand; reactions with metal carbonates, metal sulfites, and metal sulfides.

One of the easiest ways to determine if you have a metal is to treat it with an acid. In the presence of an acid and a metal, hydrogen gas (H2) will be formed. For example,

Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl2 + H2

When an acid reacts with a metal carbonate, like calcium carbonate, the end result is the formation of water and carbon dioxide. This is not anything new to anyone that has made a vinegar and baking soda volcano - acetic acid and sodium bicarbonate form a bubbly solution of carbon dioxide gas and water. What is interesting to note is the steps involved in this reaction.

Answer:

Explanation:

When acid reacts with metal sulphites it forms salt, water and Sulphur dioxide.

~~Acids+ metal sulphites-------> Salt + H2O+ SO2.

For eg

= CaSO3+ 2HCl----> CaCl2+ H2O+ SO2.

= H2SO4+ ZnSO3----> ZnSO4+ H2O+ SO2.

Hope it helps you.
