What is Distance?

The total measurement between any two points through which the body moves is called Distance.

It is a scalar quantity as it only depends on magnitude.

What is Displacement?

The minimum distance(straight path) between the initial point and final point is called Displacement.

It is a vector quantity because it depends on both direction and magnitude.

How to find out distance and displacement?

E.g. If a car moves 4km north then 3km east then what is its distance and displacement?

Distance = Total measurement

= 4km + 3km

= 7km

Displacement = shortest distance

= root of 4 x 4 + 3 x 3

= root of 16 + 9

= root of 25

= 5 km

N.B.

The distance and displacement can be equal if the body covers in straight path.

Distance can never be zero but displacement can be if the body returns to its initial position.
