Suspecting the 10,000 people marching from Deptford to London, Alarmed Shopkeepers are closed down. The marchers were dispersed by the police. A similar uproar erupted at the end of 1887; this time the Sunday, November 1887, was brutally suppressed by the military. Two years later, a strike and march through the city were waged by thousands of dockworkers. A writer said that' thousands of the strikers passed through the town without picking up a pocket or breaking a window...' The 12 day strike was called on to be recognised by the dock workers ' union. You can see from these examples that large masses in the city will attract political causes. This is both a threat and an opportunity for a large town population. State authorities have taken great time, as shown in Paris, to reduce rebellion and to improve urban aesthetics
