Europe is one of the smallest continent in the world and has the world's smallest countries in terms of area such as Vatican City, San Marino, Monaco, etc. Europe has a rich cultural heritage. It is probably the only continent where most countries have retained their indigenous cultural heritage. Despite its size, its countries are developed and have a high HDI. It has temperate and Mediterranean climate. It has ruled and colonised the world throughout 16th to 20th centuries. UK, which is in Europe, had the world's biggest empire at its peak. Its languages are spoken by billions of people.
Geographically, it has the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Ural Mountains, etc. Most of the Europe is a peninsula called Iberian Peninsula. It constituted to more than half of the total area of Europe. UK and Scotland are located on an island north of Europe, separated by it by English Channel, formed in the last Ice Age. To the north-east, there is Scandivanian Plateau on which Norway and Sweden are located. The largest rivers are River Danube and River Rhine.
