★ If α,β are the roots of x² + ax - b = 0 and γ,δ

are the roots of x² + ax + b = 0 then find

(α-γ)( β-δ) (α-δ) (β-γ).

Answer :

α + β = -a ..........(1) γ + δ = -a .......... (2)

αβ = -b .........(A) γδ = b .......... (B)

from (1) and (2) we get → α + β = γ + δ

→ α - γ = δ - β ..... (3) → α - δ = γ - β ..... (4)

Now, from (3) and (4)

= (δ - β) (β - δ) (γ - β) (β - γ)

= (δ - β)² (γ - β)²

= (δγ - δβ - βγ + β²)

= (β² - (γ + δ)β + δγ)

= (β (β + a) + b) [ from the eq (2) and (B) ]

= (αβ + b) [ from (1) β + a = α ]

= (b + b)² [ from eq (A) ]

→ (α - γ) (β - δ) (α - δ) (β - γ) = 4b²
