Rules for Change:

  • The reporting verbs changes to advice, order,request,tell,beg etc after the change of narration.
  • Sometimes when there is a negative imperative sentences, we can use reporting verbs like forbid, prohibit etc.
  • When "please" occurs in the sentences, generally we wise the reporting verb, requested.( Refer to Example-3)
  • When "let" is given in direct speech, we can use the reporting verb "suggested" or "proposed" for it. But, we have to make some changes in sentences. (Refer to Example-5).

Examples:

1. The officer shouted to his man, "Halt!"

The officer ordered his men to halt.

2.Mother said to me, "Don't run in the sun."

Mother advised me not to run in the sun Or,

Mother forbade me to run in the sun.

3. He said to me,"Please open the door."

He requested me to open the door Or,

He told me politely to open the door.

4. He said to his master," Pardon me, Sir"

He begged his master to pardon him.

5. Alice said to her friends, "Let us have a picnic."

Alice suggested having a picnic. Or,

Alice suggested to her friends that they should have a picnic.
