Answer:

The pneumotaxic center is considered an antagonist to the apneustic center, (which produces abnormal breathing during inhalation) cyclically inhibiting inhalation. The pneumotaxic center is responsible for limiting inspiration, providing an inspiratory off-switch (IOS).

Information on Pneumatoxic centre:-

  • 1. It is located in pons varolii of brain.

  • 2. It transmits inhibitory impulses to the dorsal respiratory group(DRG).

  • 3. It regulates the respiratory rate.

  • 4. It acts as switch off when breathing is more and limits inspiration.

Info on Apneustic area:-

  • 1. This area is also located in the pon.

  • 2. It stimulates inspiratory area /DRG of medulla to prolong inhalation.

  • 3. Hence, slow respiration and prolonged respiratory cycles will result if it is stimulated.
