Question :

The diagonal of a rectangular field is 60 meters more than the shorter side . If the longer side is 30 meters more than longer side . Find the sides of field.

Formula Used :

Diagonal²=longer side²+shorter side²

Solution :

  • Let the length of the shorter side be y meters

  • The length of the diagonal= 60+ y meters

  • The length of the longer side =30+ y meters

Applying Pythagoras theorem,

Diagonal² = longer side² + shorter side²

(60+y)^2= (30+y) ^2 + y^2\\\\\\3600+120y+ y^2=900+60x+ y^2+ y^2\\\\\\3600-900+120y-60y-y^2+ y^2- y^2\\\\\\-2700-60y+y^2=0\\\\\\-2700-90y+30y+y^2=0\\\\\\y(y-90)+30(y-90)=0\\\\\\(y-90)(y+30)=0\\\\\\

\textsf{If,}\\\\\\y+30=0\\\\\\y=-30\textsf{(not possible)}\\\\\\\textsf{If,}\\\\\\y-90=0\\\\\\y=90\textsf{(possible)}\\\\\\

So, the length of shorter side = y=90

Longer side 90 + 30 = 120

Answer :

The length of shorter side is 90  The length of longer side is 120
