Structure--Methyl salicylate (oil of wintergreen or wintergreen oil) is an organic compound with the formula C*6H4(OH)(CO*2*CH3). It is the methyl ester of salicylic acid. ... It is produced by many species of plants, particularly wintergreens.

Use--Wintergreen oil is made by steam processing of warmed, water-soaked wintergreen leaves. The leaves and oil are used to make medicine. Wintergreen is used for headache and other types of pain, fever, gas (flatulence), and other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses.

Side effects --Wintergreen is POSSIBLY SAFE when the leaves are used as medicine. Wintergreen oil is POSSIBLY UNSAFE to take by mouth. Taking wintergreen oil can cause ringing in the ears, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, stomach pain, and confusion.

2. Sali*cyclic acid

Structure --Salicylic acid has the formula C6*H4(OH)CO*OH, where the OH group is ortho to the carboxyl group. It is also known as 2-hydro*xy*be*nzoic acid.

Use--Medical uses. Salicylic acid as a medication is used to help remove the outer layer of the skin. As such it is used to treat warts, calluses, psoriasis, dandruff, acne, ringworm, and ichthyosis. Because of its effect on skin cells, salicylic acid is used in some shampoos to treat dandruff.
