Collenchyma cells have thick deposits of cellulose in their cell walls and appear polygonal in cross section. The strength of the tissue results from these thickened cell walls and the longitudinal interlocking of the cells. Collenchyma may form cylinders or occur as discrete strands and is one of the three ground, or fundamental, tissues in plants, together with parenchyma (living thin-walled tissue) and sclerenchyma (dead support tissue with thick cell walls).
