Today I Wrote This Poem by Kenn Nesbitt is an amusing poem in which the poet has beautifully described his poetry-writing skills as well as experience.

In the first stanza he writes he wrote poem that he was sure was good enough. He showed the poem to his teacher who found many faults in it.

In the second stanza he tells the readers that the first fault the teacher found was lack of true deep feelings missing in the poem. The teacher found no figures of speech such as metaphors and similes used in it.

In the fourth stanza he writes the teacher also did not find any narrative in it; alliteration was also missing. The poem did not belong to any set genres; the poem could neither be classified as acrostic, nor diamante, and nor haiku.

In the fifth stanza also the poet writes about other essential poetic and literary elements missing in the poem. The poem did not have personification and plot; the only poetic element it had was rhyming scheme.

In the sixth stanza the poet defends his poem by saying that he liked writing it. It was long enough. He regretted that he could not put all those literary elements in it which the teachers found missing.

In the last stanza the poet is proud of the fact that when he handed in the poem for evaluation, the teacher gave him A++++ in spite of making all the above mentioned fuss.

‘Today I Wrote This Poem’ is a poem written from a school child’s point of view. The child feels that it does not have any of the features that her teacher said should be present in a poem. There are no metaphors, alliterations or similes. It misses out on any form of narration and does not create any picture or emotion in the hearts of its readers. There is also no plot or theme in the poem. The only thing that the poem has rhyming lines.

Although the poem was missing out on all the stuff expected, the child enjoyed writing the poem. She kept it for review on her teacher’s desk. The teacher loved the poem and gave it back to the child with an A++++ rating.
